- Business Blog 30 August: Managing People for Salon Success – Listen & Help Build
In every business there is a process of collecting information, processing that information and finally, making a decision. This happens continuously to the point that you are hardly aware of it. Success, as we know, depends on TEAM effort, and that requires that everybody needs to be on the same page. However, when it comes to motivating people, there is one other factor that comes into play. That is TIMING. And to get that timing right it is useful to understand a principle in People Motivation called 'Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs'. It's not necessary to remember the name but it is to remember the principle. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a theory by Abraham Maslow, which puts forward that people are motivated by five basic categories of needs: physiological, safety, love, esteem and self-actualization, and the human psyche goes up and down like a yoyo depending on personal circumstances and the individual's psychological needs of the moment. The skill in using this principle when it comes to dealing with people, be it staff, clients, even friends and family, is to recognise exactly where the other person is on the scale and to build them up to the next level and then the next level until they reach a level of self-actualisation at which time they become extremely motivated to achieve any task given. Just a word of warning, for this to work effectively you are going to have to do twice as much listening as you do talking. – Terry Miles, MD MySalon Software Email: info@mysalonsoftware.co.za Web: mysalonsoftware.co.za
