- Business Blog: Don't Underestimate Your Clients' Intelligence
The study of hair and the role it plays in people's lives goes back thousands of years. All the way from the time it covered our bodies for warmth and protection, through the evolution of big hair, often coloured blue to make us appear scarier to our enemies, to the era when virtually everybody important wore wigs to distinguish them for ordinary people, right through to the 60's, when people like Vidal Sassoon and Mary Quant burst onto the scene launching hair into the role of fashion. And we've never looked back. Hair is your clients’ crowning glory & they know it well Little did we know that when Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, wherein he said, “If a woman has long hair, it is a crowning glory unto her”, that it would one day become a multi-billion dollar industry. What was once the job of surgeons, whose job it was to look after people's bodies, soon became a dedicated industry, similar to skin care, resulting in people that specialised in just looking after hair. Over the millennia people have experimented with colour, shape, height, curls - you name it, we've tried it. However, it has only been in the last 70 or so years as products started to address the chemical make-up of hair that they started moving away from topical products that just affected the out layers of the hair to satisfy the feel of the hair, and started addressing hair chemistry and the effect on the actual hair structure that hair went through. It was only through this process that they realised the amount of stress and trauma hair goes through every day resulting in chemical, mechanical and environmental damage. You are your clients’ hair doctor for the best hair health & your clients’ overall wellbeing Why did it take us so long? Maybe because there are no nerve endings in the hair, as there are in every other part of our body, that can scream with pain when damaged. Wake-up call to the industry! You need to 'feel' the pain of damaged hair and become its conscience AND explain what hair trauma is, why hair becomes traumatised and how clients, with your professional advice, can remedy the problem and take more responsibility for the health of their hair. Your clients know all too well when their hair just isn’t looking right or behaving. Like you, clients also understand that hair is not just a dead substance growing out of the head, but a living and growing part of their body that will either become their 'crowning glory' or their worst nightmare. Step up and BE THE DOCTOR. – Terry Miles, MD MySalon Software Email: info@mysalonsoftware.co.za Web: mysalonsoftware.co.za

- Local Inspiration from Ray at Gary Rom Hairdressing
Brighter blonde for Ray's beautiful client, who needed her hair revitalised after borehole water dulled her hair's shine. Click the image below to see the Instagram post. Borehole water is extremely mineral rich and contains loads of heavy metals which dull your shine and cause mud dunes in blonde hair ! You can combat this by using a shower filter, or treating yourself to a spoil in the salon instead of doing it yourself at home 😉 Process Detoxifying masque, foils, toner (Igora Vibrance 9-1 and 9,5-1) and Gary Rom Haircare in-salon treatment 💪🏻 Stylist: Ray Products: Schwarzkopf, Gary Rom Haircare Salon: Gary Rom Hairdressing, Constantia Follow Ray on Instagram @ray.theconstantiastylist We'd love to feature your work! - EOHCB: Why Psychological Safety in the Workplace Matters and How To Create it
Numerous studies have shown that businesses can thrive when they prioritize collaboration and foster a sense of belonging among their employees. Research indicates that companies with a strong sense of belonging can experience a 56% increase in productivity and a 50% reduction in employee turnover. However, many companies do not fully understand the importance of psychological safety in creating an environment that encourages collaboration. To create high-performing teams, it is crucial for companies to invest in psychologically safe work environments. This article will explore what psychological safety is, why it is important, and how leaders can promote it in the workplace. Psychological safety refers to the feeling and belief that one can express their thoughts, opinions, and ideas without fear of degradation or shame. According to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, safety is a basic human need. Creating psychologically safe work environments is critical for fostering high-performing teams and retaining employees. The term "psychological safety" was coined by Harvard Business School professor Amy Edmondson, who defined it as a shared belief that the team is safe for interpersonal risk-taking. Establishing norms is critical to success and participation when it comes to creating psychologically safe environments, according to Edmondson and Harvard Business School professor Jeff Polzer. Leadership reactions and responses to team members are more important than speaking out for creating a psychologically safe environment. Psychological safety can act as a buffer against undermining behaviors that drive people away from various industries. Developing a psychologically safe work culture has numerous benefits, including enhanced employee engagement, fostering an inclusive workplace culture, encouraging creativity and new ideas, improved employee well-being, creation of brand ambassadors, reduced employee turnover, and boosting team performance. 7 Reasons psychological safety is important at work An effective team values psychological safety as much as they do physical safety and performance standards. Developing a psychologically safe work culture has many benefits, including: • Enhanced employee engagement When team members feel safe at work, it’s easier for them to engage. This could be in a team meeting, solving problems, collaborating on projects, and engaging with their customers and peers. Additionally, safe teams inspire employees to be fully present at work versus dozing off or counting the hours until the workday is over. • Fosters an inclusive workplace culture It’s more important than ever to make all team members feel included. Safe workspaces welcome diverse teams. They allow all team members to flourish regardless of gender, colour, race, background, or political preferences. The result is a rich give-and-take experience where everyone feels connected and part of a united front. • It encourages creativity and new ideas In order for creativity and ideas to flow organically, team members must feel safe expressing themselves. Imagine how many inspired ideas were never shared because a team member didn't feel safe sharing. • Improved employee well-being Mental health highly contributes to overall well-being. When employees are mentally healthy, it's easier for them to perform at an optimal level and avoid stressors that keep them from doing their best. • It creates brand ambassadors Creating a psychologically safe workplace is one of the best ways to inspire team members to constantly brag about you. Team members can’t help but gush about how wonderful work is when they’re being treated right. • Reduced employee turnover A recent study reported that team members who feel psychologically safe at work are less likely to leave. In the end, why leave a company that treats you with respect and makes you feel safe and valued? There are horrendous costs that come with interviewing, hiring, and training team members (among other costs). High employee turnover isn’t sustainable for successful businesses. • Boosted team performance When you have got highly engaged employees that don’t want to leave, teams perform. When you have an inclusive workplace culture, brand ambassadors, and inspired ideas, teams perform. When you have healthy employees in addition to all of the above, you have got a winning recipe for boosting team performance. In summary, creating a psychologically safe work environment is essential for developing high-performing teams and retaining employees. Leaders can promote psychological safety by establishing norms and reacting positively to team members. The benefits of a psychologically safe workplace are numerous, including enhanced employee engagement, increased creativity, and improved employee well-being. - Business Blog: Carpe Diem – Business Opportunities for the 4th Quarter of 2023
September 1 has come and gone and, in many ways, marks the countdown to the end of another trading year. Traditionally, up to 60% of salon turnover is generated in the last four months of the year so it makes sense to optimise turnover for this period. Here are a few ideas that I have found to be very helpful. Get your team motivated and in a festive summer spirit. 80% percent of a salon visit is the experience and happy salons attract happy shoppers. With only so many weeks left before clients start going away for their holidays, plan appointments for your top clients between now and the end of the year. If you don't, some of those clients might end up spending the big bucks while elsewhere on holiday! Staffing levels are very important in the build-up to the end of the year. Try to schedule most staff leave throughout the quieter times of the year, so the salon is fully staffed during the 'silly season'. Start educating clients to avoid hair trauma before the harsh summer sun and holidays loom. If this is not part of your business ethos, i.e. hair care before all else, then there is never a better time to promote hair protection than summer. Start promoting gift-giving ideas. This is very popular in beauty salons but not so in hair salons. If a regular and satisfied client wants to gift a friend or colleague with a haircare make-over, this is people power referring new business in action! Stimulate retail sales by bonusing treatments for clients during the first two months of the new year. When selling home care for clients to protect their hair while on holiday, why not bonus complimentary basin treatments in January and February ready for your clients return to work? The least you will get is they pay for the blow but you will also get a happy client. Right now is the time to plan your 4th Quarter for Success! – Terry Miles, MD MySalon Software Email: info@mysalonsoftware.co.za Web: mysalonsoftware.co.za
