THASA Alberton Annual Avant Garde Hair Competition Showcases Creativity and Talent

The Hair Academy of South Africa (THASA) Alberton recently hosted its highly anticipated annual student competition, a highlight on the academy’s calendar and a celebration of artistry, innovation, and imagination in hairstyling. This year’s theme, “Avant Garde Hair: Venice Masquerade Masked Ball”, challenged students to push creative boundaries and deliver showstopping designs inspired by the elegance and mystery of a masquerade ball.
Held at The Social Hub in Alberton, the event captivated audiences with dramatic creations that fused intricate hairstyling, elaborate masks, and bold artistic vision. Proudly sponsored by Goldwell, the competition provided students with a platform to showcase their skills and express their individuality through their craft.

After a showcase of exceptional talent, the top honors went to:
1st Place – Lameze Skippers
2nd Place – Jody Lira
3rd Place – Zelmarie du Plessis
Other competitors who impressed with their creativity and dedication included: Enrique Van Strijland, Amelia Skippers, Cassidy Braga, Zante Le Roux, Rochelle Van Der Westhuizen, Rebecca Motang, Paisley Crichton, Lane Chegwiggen, Mpho Toka, Queen Sibayoni, and Tyra Johnson.











The judging panel brought together respected industry professionals: Brad de Waal (Hairnews), Alexia-Maria Chrysafis (Fox Davidson Hair Design and Schwarzkopf), Candice Holder (Modern Hair & Beauty/Wella), and Sasha-Lee De Vries (Authentic Beauty Concept and Schwarzkopf). Their expertise and keen eye for detail ensured that every finalist’s work was recognized and celebrated.
The competition not only highlighted the remarkable talent within THASA Alberton but also underscored the academy’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of hairstylists. As the finalists’ creations demonstrated, the future of hairstyling is as bold and imaginative as ever.
