THASA Alberton's Beyond the Chair Avant Garde Competition: Where Tomorrow’s Hair Artists Begin

In July 2026, The Hair Academy of South Africa Alberton (THASA) challenged its students to step outside the familiar and enter the world of Avant-Garde hair artistry.

But this competition was never simply about creating a winning look. It was about opening a door — to creativity, confidence and seeing hair in a completely different way.

As educators, we have a responsibility to prepare students for more than simply working behind a salon chair. The hair industry continues to evolve, and the next generation of hairdressers needs to become more than skilled stylists. They need to become artists, thinkers, creators and visionaries.

Avant-Garde gives students the opportunity to explore exactly that.

It takes them outside their comfort zone and challenges them to think differently. Students must develop an idea, visualise it, experiment with shape, texture, colour and structure, and ultimately turn their vision into something tangible.

And it isn't always easy — which is exactly why it is so valuable.

There are moments of doubt, frustration and uncertainty. But those are often the moments where the biggest growth happens.

Competition teaches students to trust their hands, but more importantly, to trust their own ideas. It shows them that there isn't always one correct answer. Sometimes you need to take a risk, experiment and be brave enough to create something that hasn't been done before.

That is where the visionary begins to emerge.

The Avant-Garde competition also gives students valuable exposure to the standards and expectations of the professional industry. Creativity, presentation, precision and professionalism all play a role in becoming an exceptional hair artist.

We were incredibly proud of what our students produced in July. Watching them step forward, challenge themselves and discover creativity they may not have realised they possessed was one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.

Our winners, Juanay Muller and Sumike Botha, demonstrated exactly what can happen when students are given the opportunity and freedom to explore their creativity.

But the real victory belongs to every student who stood up and gave it a go.

Because competitions aren't only about the trophy.

They're about the journey.

They're about learning to handle pressure, learning from mistakes, discovering your creative identity and realising that you are capable of more than you initially thought.

At THASA, the goal is not simply to create hairdressers who follow trends. It is to help develop the people who will create the trends of tomorrow.

Avant-Garde is one of the ways we open that door.

And when a student walks through it, we don't just see a competitor.

We see a future artist.

A future educator.

A future leader.

A future visionary for our industry.

This is why we compete.

This is why we create.

This is why we push beyond the comfort zone.

Because the future of hairdressing belongs to those who are brave enough to imagine it differently.
