With the return of rambunctious comedy, Rivals, it’s been declared that 80s hair is so back – and we’re here for it! Big, bouncy, beautiful volume speaks for itself, oozing confidence, and understated elegance. However, this time around, we’re leaving the hair gel, bad perms, and crunchy hair in the past. With the use of volume-boosting products and the correct styling techniques, achieving big, bouncy hair has never been easier.
The secret to voluptuous, voluminous 80s hair is how you style it! Cutting long layers throughout the back of the hair will inject volume and remove some weight, meaning bouncier, lighter locks and more lift when it comes to styling. I’d always recommend using a large round brush inject extra volume and shape the layers. Blowdry the hair back and forth away from the root, lifting the hair to achieve a bouncy, full-bodied finish! If you’re looking for a tighter curl, then I’d recommend using a small barrel curling wand to create more concise ringlets which can be brushed out. Follow-up with a texturising spray to capture the ‘un-done’ essence of 80s hair and set with a light hold hairspray.
Crunchy hair couldn’t be avoided in the 80s, but this is 2026! My top tip is a little goes a long way when it comes to styling products – i.e. don’t overdo it! As with anything hair-related, beginning with a good foundation is crucial to achieving the hair of your dreams! I’d recommend using a shampoo and conditioner which has been formulated for plumping up your strands – my go-to is the Kerasilk Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner. When shampooing, focus on your roots to remove any product build-up and concentrate your conditioner on your mid-lengths to avoid weighing down the roots. Avoid any heavy-products if you’re looking to achieve big, airy volume – yes, that includes the strong-hold hairspray! Instead, opt for a lighter volumising mousse which delivers the same hold with less crunch. I’m loving the KMS AddVolume Volumizing Spray, it strengthens and makes hair feel thicker while providing lift and intense fullness. If you still want body, without too many curls, then I’d opt for the KMS Conscious Style Beach Style Crème which amplifies texture and volume, creating gorgeous beachy waves.
If your hair is naturally straight, heat protectant is a MUST when it comes to styling – it’s scary how many people do not realise it’s importance! Heat-styling strips the hair of its natural moisture, whilst severely weakening the structure of your hair structure. I’d recommend using the KMS Thermashape Hot Flex Heat Protectant which is ideal for creating defined curls. Another recommendation is investing in a good quality hair oil that you can run through the lengths to soothe any frizz – for me, it has to be the Kerasilk Multi-Benefit Hair Oil for lasting nourishment and shine.
