Craig’s Background: From Sales Consultant to Owning the First TPO
Durban-born Craig Banfield studied a B-Comm in KZN and served three years of accounting articles. His professional football schedule put an end to his accounting aspirations, and he took a job as a sales consultant for Sharp Electronics.
Craig then joined the hairdressing industry 34 years ago as a sales consultant for Wella in Durban in 1986. Four years later, he was headhunted to join Twincare International as the Redken Area Manager for KZN. Craig relocated to Johannesburg in 1998 after being appointed National Sales Manager. He then opened the very first TPO in South Africa – TPO Durban – in 2009.
“The TPO concept evolved through discussion with Stav around mid 2008, at which time Twincare was adding to their multi-branding strategy. Together we pioneered the concept and I opened the first TPO in January 2009,” Craig explains.
What is the biggest value of the TPO to Durban salons?
The convenience of having stock on display in a locally based showroom allows stylists to gain clarity in their shopping experience. Time can be saved by either collecting the items that you need, or making use of our efficient delivery system which is invaluable to the KZN market.
To keep pace with a new generation of clients seeking instant gratification, we need to continue to improve on the speed of our service delivery. The TPO concept was born to deliver convenience.

What precautions do you have in place to fight the Covid-19 outbreak?
We observe Social Distancing and ensure that only a limited number of people are in showroom at any time. Cleanliness is vital, and we disinfect all surfaces and card machines between transactions including door handles. Hand Sanitizer is used by staff and customer between transactions, and all our cash as well as our incoming stock is disinfected before integration to the TPO. This has been put into place before the lockdown and we will continue with these precautions after the lockdown has ended.
What words of encouragement do you have for the 3-week lockdown ahead?
We are all facing new challenges as the country takes steps to limit the spread of CoronaVirus (COVID-19). We urge you to follow the protocols set out to help government and society manage the situation. Stay safe during this Lockdown period so that we may return renewed, and begin to restore the health of our industry and beyond.
