Thanks to the proactive kindness of owners Jeannette and Lars, and the team at Hair Health & Beauty in the Linbro Business Park, Sandton, a colony of feral cats are being cared for. After the arrival of the first cat, who now lives in style inside the warehouse where she is adored by visiting customers, others arrived. Jeannette set up a feeding and neutering programme, and put up warm shelters and feeding stations for the cats around Hair Health & Beauty’s premises. The colony now numbers around fourteen cats who are well cared for, loved and valued... every cat has been named and many of them have become tame and friendly. “These cats have such personalities and they bring us so much joy... they’re wonderful to have around,” Jeannette explains. “And for a warehouse situated in the middle of an industrial complex – let’s just say we are fortunate to have no problems with rodents any more... none at all!” Thanks to Hair Health & Beauty for this amazing, caring initiative. Its aim was to acknowledge the contribution small businesses like salons make to the country’s economy, while tackling some of the challenges they face. The event provided a perfect platform to promote local hairdresser, make-up artists and fashion designers who showed their talents during this event. It’s easy to stop thinking about how your tools look, when you work with them every day. You can become so used to their appearance that you don’t really notice when your comb starts looking battered, or your brush bristles are past their best, or your tint brush is becoming so worn it’s turning into more of a tint spatula... But although you are used to their ever-shabbier appearance, your clients may notice and it will affect their perceptions of the salon. The fabulous Shaping Futures initiative by Schwarzkopf Professional, will be running its next programme later in 2017 and applications are now open for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, who have ambition to succeed and a passion for learning and would like to change their lives and empower themselves by learning a new craft. 30 students will be selected from the applicants. These students will attend a free 6-8 week hairdressing learnership programme which will cover technical hairdressing skills, business advice, motivation, interview training and work readiness preparation. The education is given by leading local and international experts, who offer their time to help these aspiring hairdressers develop their skills and talents. The course includes a free breakfast and lunch every day, and students also receive a free hairdressing starter pack containing scissors, a tint bowl and brush, a spray bottle, clips, combs, mannequin heads, aprons and bags. On completion of the course, graduates receive certificates as proof of the skills they have learned, which helps them to find salon placements where they can continue their journey towards becoming a hairdressing professional. Top performing students are assisted with employment opportunities. The Shaping Futures team, in partnership with the Sharpeville Foundation and Le Looks salons, have secured job placements for almost 86% of the graduates from the March/April 2016 programme. This initiative can change lives and make dreams come true, offering hope for the future and a rewarding career to the people who deserve a chance and opportunity in life. An example of the programme’s success is the story of Christopher Sibiya, pictured below, whose passion for hairdressing, dedication and determination allowed him to embrace an entirely new career, and achieve his goal of becoming a salon owner. Color Melting By Chad Demchuk, USA This collection won Best Color Collection at the Trifecta Awards, held by Salon Services for salons in Canada, Mexico and the USA. “Inspired by melting crayon art, Demchuk created hair colour that tricks the eye by not knowing where colour starts and stops.
