Although most cruise ships are currently anchored and waiting out the Covid-19 pandemic, the good news is that they will be back, bigger and busier than ever, once the epidemic is over and travel restrictions have lifted.

If you would like to find out more about what life on board can offer you in terms of a generous nestegg of tax-free money, as well as your chance to see the world and have an adventure of a lifetime while working in the career you love – sign up for your confidential interview HERE.

Below is the interview with Phindile Mchunu on her cruise ship experience.

Q: What ship were you on and where did it sail?

A: I was aboard the Golden Princess, sailing around Australia, New Zealand, Fiji islands and USA. For me, the best part of the experience has been visiting New Zealand and the Fiji Islands.

Q: Please tell us all about the ship

A: This is a medium sized cruise ship which carries about 2,900 passengers and 1,200 crew members. We had almost everything on board and the range of staff working on the ship was amazing. Staff included tailors, engineers, IT professionals, plumbers, officers, shop assistants and of course, hair and beauty professionals!

Q: What made you decide to apply to work for The Onboard Spa? (now known as London Wellness Academy)

A: I wanted to experience international travel, earn great money, have a life changing experience, and also meet people from all over the world.

Q: What qualifications and experience did you have before starting your contract?

A: I am a senior qualified hairstylist with 14 years’ experience, which shows that even an older and more established hairstylist can take the plunge and sign up for an onboard contract.

Q: What was life like on board?

A: Life on board is amazing. Make no mistake, the hours are long. We worked a 12 hour shift with two hours off for lunch and dinner – but hard work pays off! In terms of earnings, you have to be in it to win it!

Q: What’s the biggest learning curve been?

A: Patience is the key!

Q: Where were your co-workers from?

A: From the Philippines, Italy, Serbia, Indonesia, India, and the UK. I have learned so much from all the different nationalities, including picking up bits of their different languages!

Q: Would you sign up for another contract?

A: Most definitely. I can’t wait to do a second one – that’s if my husband doesn’t mind too much! #laughter
