Scalp Problems: Diagnosis, Treatment & Solutions

Scalp problems can be uncomfortable, embarrassing, unsightly and painful for clients. They can lead to problems such as hair loss, can interfere with healthy hair growth, and can also make clients reluctant to have services such as colour.

Finding solutions to scalp problems will transform your clients’ lives, optimise their hair growth, and open up additional opportunities for them to enjoy the full beauty of their hair.

Here are some questions and answers on commonly experienced scalp problems.

Q: What are the signs of scalp problems

A: The signs are as follows:

Redness or irritability

Sensitivity or burning

Itchiness, scaling, flaking

Q: Does lifestyle influence scalp health?

A: YES – Stress and diet can have a huge influence on the scalp.

Q: How does pH affect the scalp?

A: Human hair and scalp oil has a pH balance of between 4.5 and 5.5. This is the natural pH which is important to maintain. However, a lot of hair products disrupt the natural pH of the hair and scalp.

Q: How can clients help to fight problems like dandruff, seborrhea, psoriasis and oily scalp?

A: Make sure the scalp is always clean, and make a point to wash your scalp regularly to eliminate any sebum or build up that might cause fungi or bacteria to thrive. Remember that one wash will not completely cleanse an oily scalp – you should wash twice, rinsing thoroughly in between washes.

Do not use harsh shampoos on your scalp, especially ones containing alcohol, as this will worsen the condition.

Make sure to use a Shampoo that contains natural ingredients that moisturize the scalp

Stay away from shampoos containing sulphates and parabens and instead use products rich in natural oils.

Recommendation: INOAR’s Sensitine Cleansing lotion has been developed to target scalp issues such as Seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis.

The powerful ingredients include ultra-purified Asian centella extract also known as “Gotu Kola”. This has been used extensively in Ayurvedic medicine to treat eczema, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis and cradle cap in babies. Another amazing ingredient is Niacinamide which helps with skin redness, irritability, sensitivity and inflammation.

Q: What is the difference between dandruff and dry scalp?

A: Dandruff and dry scalp have the same main symptoms, which are falling flakes and an itchy scalp, but dry scalp is caused by irritated skin become dry and flaking; the flakes are usually very small. Dandruff is usually found on oily scalps, and is often caused by a yeast organism which triggers excessive buildup and then shedding. The flakes are usually bigger and oilier.

Q: What are the best solutions for a dry scalp?

A: Avoid shampoos containing sulphates and salts, or that are harsh on the scalp. Use moisturizing shampoo and conditioners, and products containing Argan oil or Coconut oil are especially good. Using oils as a treatment is also very important, massaging the oil into the scalp regularly, before and after shampooing.

Recommendation: INOAR’s Virgin Coconut oil or Argan oil can be used as a pre oil treatment, massaging it into the scalp leaving it in overnight and washing the next day as usual. This can be used with treatments and while colouring the hair to protect and moisturize the scalp.
