We are thrilled that the gazetted rules allowed for hair and beauty to be open so that salons can continue doing business.

However, it is likely to be a fairly quiet two weeks as a lot of people are sick, quarantining, or waiting until we go up a level and the wave flattens.

So what are you going to do during this time?

Here are some tips to make the most productive use of your time!

  1. Popi Act: Register as an information officer for your business to make sure you are compliant. The EOHCB wrote an informative article on this which you can access HERE.

  2. If last minute cancellations occur, get the message out to your database or on social media, offer a special rate and see if anyone wants a discounted spot.

  3. Put time aside to do one on one hairdressing appointments – just you and the client in an otherwise empty salon! If this is possible in your business you might find people appreciate it at this time.

  4. Offer to send out homecare products and (for those who really need it) – even the “root kits” that were popular in the last lockdown. Again, you are making a plan while times are tough and helping people who can’t, or really don’t want, to visit an actual salon.

  5. Market yourself as a place of safety, do a video, take pics, update your social media. Even if clients don’t come in within the next two weeks, you will still be top of mind when they are ready to come back again. That is what you want.

  6. Engage with your clients, make sure they are well, these are anxious times. If your salon is quiet, take some time to spread the love and care. If your good clients are sick, send them a little care pack of goodies.

  7. And engage with your staff likewise! Make sure they are all OK. How can you help? Do they need time off to spend at home? Now is a time when you should be looking at shifts for your staff and allowing people a few days off to reduce risk, if times are quieter.

  8. Quieter times are great for planning! That way you are poised for success when it does get busy again. Make time for the chores and decisions and research that you have been putting off. Keep yourself in full active Energizer bunny mode, so that when things get busy you have the right mindset and are ready to embrace it.
