Wellbeing is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as “the state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy.”

According to the Better Health Channel, “Wellbeing is not just the absence of disease or illness. It’s a complex combination of a person's physical, mental, emotional, and social health factors. Wellbeing is strongly linked to happiness and life satisfaction. In short, wellbeing could be described as how you feel about yourself and your life.”

Why is wellbeing important in the workplace?

Promoting wellbeing can help prevent stress and create positive working environments where individuals and organisations can thrive. Good health and wellbeing can be a core enabler of employee engagement and organisational performance.

These are the 6 steps to successfully improve health and wellbeing, especially in the workplace:

  • Practice good overall self-care. Eat well, stay hydrated, exercise regularly, have enough sleep, and maintain a good social life.

  • Take a break and spend some time in the sunlight!

  • Maintain a positive balance between work and personal life. It is vital to have a life outside of work.

  • Communication. Conversations amongst colleagues about your wellbeing can help create an atmosphere of openness and tolerance in the workplace.

  • Utilise Employee support programmes.

  • Practice mindfulness of the present moment, each day or in the midst of a tough situation. One of the most important factors to your overall wellbeing, may we never forget that laughter is the best medicine!
