Gary Rom Interviews Artistic Director and Salon Owner Charlene Schlorke on Hair Principles

“The condition of our client’s hair is at the forefront in all that we do. Our mission is to maintain your hair at a condition that allows it to always have great natural shine and colour, which makes it easier to manage and style.”

Gary Rom interviews Charlene Schlorke - Artistic Director and owner of the Gary Rom Hairdressing Midstream and Menlyn Maine salons, both exhibiting the consummate expression for her love and passion for hair.

I chose to interview Charlene firstly because she was the first Gary Rom staff member to venture into the world of franchising.

Coming through the ranks as an apprentice Charl worked her way up to Artistic Director level and managed the Southdowns branch of the Gary Rom group for a number of years.

Charl is a dedicated salon owner, she is hard working, diligent and empathic to the needs of her team. She is a true example of what it means to be a salon professional.

A Matter of Integrity

“I have always believed that the integrity of a client’s hair dictates the outcome of the salon visit. If the condition of hair could be measured, and 1 was the worst hair in the world, and 10 was the best hair in the world, if I worked on a head of hair that measured a 4 out of 10, I could not achieve better than a 4 out of 10 result: so 4 out of 10 colour result, 4 out of 10 for shine, design, manageability etc.

I have often worked on a head of hair where I was disappointed with the result, not because of skill level, but that the hair simply would not allow me to achieve the desired result.

With this in mind, every time a client comes into one of our salons, an integrity test is performed, to ascertain whether chemical services can be performed or not.

If it is in the best interests of the client to not perform a chemical service, this is the advice that is given to the client. In our world, the condition of our clients’ hair is far more important than turnover.”
