2021 Hairnews Awards: Top 4 Best Box Colour Corrections

We are so excited to share with you the top four Best Box Colour Corrections from the 2021 Hairnews Awards. Congratulations to our Winner and Finalists in this very strong and well supported section.

Winner - Lakin Dos Reis - Lakin Hair

Congratulations to Lakin on submitting the winning entry. Below is her Box Colour Correction story and how she achieved these stunning results.

“My client usually does a full root application with me as she enjoys being a platinum blonde. She remembered however that when she comes to me, I don’t take the bleaching powder further than her regrowth to ensure no damage and over processing, so she tried to follow the same rules.

She started with her application and realized halfway that she didn’t have enough product to do her full head and couldn’t go to the shops to buy more, needless to say. She took massive sections in her hair and tried to rub as much product on to her untouched roots as she possibly could. The result was some sections of her hair being over processed, some under processed, some untouched and some just completely blotchy.

The challenge:

After her consultation I prepared her for a full root application, as it was the only way to eliminate all the Colour bands.

I used Wella Blondor bleaching powder 1:2 with 20 vol, and Olaplex number 1. Only applying to her roots and then did a water and Olaplex number 1 solution on her mid lengths to ends. I then rinsed her hair at the basin and used Olaplex number 2 as treatment and porosity equalizer. I then used Wella Illumina 10/69 and 9/60 1:1 with 6 vol as toner.

I lifted her hair extremely slowly and took my time with her hair as it was extremely distressed and needed a lot of attention. My full processing time was 6 hours. Both my client and I were tired at the end of the day, but she has never been happier”.

Our Finalists also describe their creative solutions to their colour correction challenges:

Silver Award - Melissa Da Silva Gouveia - Hepburns Style Salon

“My client felt her hair was dark and dull, she experimented with a few box colours. She couldn't get her hair to go lighter, it just became more and more orange. She wanted a soft pearl blond with a shadow root as she can't always get to a salon to have her roots done. Her desired tone was a soft ash beige.

The challenge:

I started with removing the buildup of colour first. Client’s hair integrity was good.

I used matrix Light master with the clay additive and olaplex nr 1 with 30 volume developer and did an overall freehand balayage to lighten most of the hair. It was done about 6 cm from the roots.

After it processed, we rinsed, olaplex nr 2 and toned with color sync 8A and 10V and 9 volume peroxide.

I then dried her hair and did a face frame and teasy lights with matrix light master and 20 volume, olaplex step 1, to create some lightness on the halo and face, every second foil I did a lowlight with 7AA Matrix power cools. Once it had processed, I rinsed and shampooed with olaplex no 4.

I then did a root melt with Matrix 7AA power cools and 9 volume developer, as well as an overall tone on the newly lifted hair with Matrix acid violet toner and clear mixed with 9 Volume. Then olaplex nr 2.

I finished her styling off with olaplex nr 6 & 7.

Bronze Award - Fatima Sayanvala - Hijabella Hair Studio

“My client’s home attempt at good hair unfortunately went terribly wrong and she landed up with bands of color and stripes on her head. She walked in with tears and requested that we please try and assist to fix her color. She wanted a balayage look.

The challenge:

Due to the huge imbalance of color as well as the damage that was already on her hair, I needed to do treatments as well as rebalance her color without causing more breakage.

I started off with two color renews to remove unwanted color - then did a treatment. Thereafter did a balayage using free lights from Wella as well as Wellaplex all the time in all the color and de colourizer.

I applied a full color in between the foils, once I achieved an even lift, I finished off with a toner, a good cut and styled”.
