Pantone’s 2020 Colour is Announced: Classic Blue is the New Black

Colour forecaster Pantone has announced their 2020 Color of the Year – and it’s the comforting and timeless Classic Blue.

This is a colour that offers calmness, confidence and connection. It provides stability in a time of change. As Laurie Pressman from the Pantone Color Institute explains, “Many of us looked at 2020 as the future, but now we’re here.”

The future is not quite what many of us expected. Social media takes time and attention and can breed anxiety. Even though we are connected, our relationships are suffering. Global politics is moving in a frightening direction as far-right support grows, and mass propaganda machines are proving effective at creating fake news and challenging the truth.

People are looking for a dependable foundation as we move into a new decade and era.

Blue gives a feeling of calm and reassurance in a time where many people don’t know where to turn, or what to trust. It’s the colour of the sky at dusk which symbolises a fresh start and is a universal colour. It is a peaceful, tranquil colour that is honest and relatable.

Classic Blue has already made an appearance on the catwalks, and it can serve as a fashion baseline just as black does. It’s a fabulous colour for highlighting textures, and because it’s a timeless colour, it won’t go out of style quickly.
