An increasing number of people who are recovering from COVID-19 are reporting hair loss as a side effect of the illness. NIOXIN, the world’s number one¹ Global Selling Salon Brand for thicker, fuller² hair examines the main causes and asks how to recover from hair fall after COVID-19?
Whilst we still do not know enough about why exactly COVID-19 sufferers have experienced hair loss, the fact is, any serious illness can cause hair shedding.
According to infectious disease expert Amesh A. Adalja, MD, Senior Scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security in Maryland, serious illnesses can cause what is known as telogen effluvium, which is a form of temporary hair loss, and COVID-19 certainly falls into that category.
In addition, there are many other factors that even those with mild cases of COVID-19 may have experienced that could have contributed to a result in hair loss. For example, reduced nutrition and blood circulation, which are common consequences of infectious diseases.
However, it is not just those who have had COVID-19 who will be suffering from hair loss, for many people the past year has been incredibly stressful, and stress is a major cause of hair loss. Stress and hair loss are intricately connected.
Any situation that increases stress levels such as work pressures, financial pressures, living a hectic lifestyle or even losing someone close to you will contribute to thinning hair and hair shedding.
Why does this happen? Stress can produce increased levels of testosterone, which converts to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and interrupts the hair's growth cycle. Stress also constricts blood supply through the capillaries, restricting oxygen, nutrient uptake, and vitamins to the follicle. Hair loss might not be immediate though, and it may happen 6 to 12 months after the stressful episode.
The good news is, Nioxin has a portfolio of haircare products and treatments that will help.
Elizma Crous, Modern Hair and Beauty’s National Technical Manager, recommends starting with a recommended Nioxin System Kit at the first sign of hair loss. Each kit contains a Cleanser Shampoo, Revitalising Conditioner and Scalp & Hair Treatment. “There are six formulas to accommodate all hair types, including heavily coloured and bleached hair, and you’ll see thicker fuller hair within 30 days of regular use,” Elizma says.
Another hero product in the range that Elizma recommends using alongside the System Kit, is Night Density Rescue, proven to boost hair density in 2 months thanks to its anti-oxidation effect on the scalp surface.
Whilst COVID-19 and the stress related to the impact of the pandemic might well be to blame for a nation of people with thinning hair, it is worth noting that 50% of the population will deal with hair loss at some point in their lives. Genetics, nutrition, medication, post-pregnancy, and environmental factors all impact our hair and scalp health. So, ensuring that you are creating the best possible environment for your hair and scalp should definitely be something that’s part of your regular routine, not just once a trauma has occurred.
