Is Hair Loss Affecting Your Lockdown Clients? Solutions You Can Offer

May 11, 2020

The percentage of male and female clients affected by hair loss and thinning hair has increased over the past decades, due to many factors – diet, stress, pollution, hormonal hair loss, medications and more.

We have noticed that during lockdown a significant number of people have been complaining about hair loss and that they have noticed it occurring – or recurring – where it was not a problem pre-lockdown.

Two factors are going to have an increased effect on your clients’ hair growth in the post-coronavirus future – stress and illness.

It is important that you make clients aware of the fact that stress can cause hair loss. This is particularly important if your clients are doing something different with their hair – such as applying a home care kit you have provided for them to refresh their colour! You cannot physically consult with them and therefore will not be able to pick up the first signs of thinning hair beforehand.

You do not want a client who is losing hair as a result of their stressed-out condition, to worry that the home colour kit contributed to hair loss.

Therefore, we recommend that you get in touch with ALL your clients and question them about whether they have noticed additional hair being lost when they brush or wash their hair, whether their hair feels thinner than usual, and whether they are noticing any changes in density when they style it.

More About Stress Related Hair Loss

Stress is a major cause of hair loss. This hair loss won’t be noticed immediately at the onset of a stressful situation, but becomes apparent about three months down the line as the body reacts to ongoing stress.

Stress can push more of the hair into the “resting phase” so that hair seems to grow more slowly, and then larger amounts of hair are lost all at once, so your client has the additional stress of noticing a lot of her hair falling out. This is known as telogen effluvium and results in thinner hair throughout the head, often more noticeable in certain areas such as the crown of the head.

Another stress-related cause of hair loss is alopecia areata, where stress triggers an autoimmune reaction causing your body to attack its own hair follicles. This results in patches of complete hair loss visible on the head. Hair will usually grow back once the stress has subsided but further stress may cause further hair loss.

More About Illness Related Hair Loss: Coronavirus

There are numerous illnesses and medications that contribute to hair loss – however a number of people that have suffered from coronavirus have experienced hair loss and poor hair growth during or after their illness. Because coronavirus commonly affects the lungs and can affect oxygen levels in the body, it will impact upon hair growth speed and patterns, especially if the illness is prolonged or if the client is very ill and/or hospitalised.

Be aware that your coronavirus-affected clients may suffer from hair loss and may require some help from you in regrowing their hair.
