Working as a Cruise Ship Hairstylist: Interview with Kenneth Melville Fisher

Q: When did you join Steiner?

A: I joined Steiner Transoceanic in November 1999 , just at the turn of the millennium ! I had my own salon in Newton Park Port Elizabeth, but heard that they were interviewing for positions onboard. On hearing I was selected, great excitement ensued!

Q: What was the training like?

A: The training required before embarking on board is rigorous. My training was done in London , this however has since changed and there is now a local training academy in Cape Town where you learn everything you need to know to be proficient.

Q: How many contracts did you complete on board?

A: I was very fortunate to have completed 8 contracts onboard luxury cruise liners including Princess, P&O ,Royal Caribbean. The ships I worked on were Crown Princess, Dawn Princess, Star Princess (This was a set up of a new build ship in Italy - a wonderful experience as the team were selected to set up the spa and take the new ship out on her inauguration cruise), Island Princess (Hawaii), Caribbean Princess, New Crown Princess, Freedom of the Seas, and Liberty of the Seas.

Q: Where did you travel?

A: I was so privileged to travel every continent, and itinerary. Each contract I chose to see a new part of the world , ie Mediterranean , Baltics , Russia , USA , east and west coast. Alaska , Caribbean , British isles , Greenland , Iceland Panama canal , Singapore , HongKong , Osaka , Okinawa to name a few!

Q: What were the biggest challenges working on board?

A: Being able to work under pressure is important, especially on sea days, where the Captain’s Dinner and formal nights mean that stylists have to do a long day including many blowdries and upstyles. However , the spa manager is always aware of a slightly slower stylist , and fun is always had!

Q: What are the biggest perks?

A: The crew are so well looked after by everyone. As stylists you have full deck privileges. In other words, you may use all the amenities onboard , ie restaurants, shows, etc! I am in touch with friends I have made all over the globe to this day and value and treasure my travels !

Q: What were your earnings like?

A: Remuneration is paid in American dollars. It is tax free, and the commission structure is phenomenal. Tips are also very good!
