Indigo Hair Design’s Different Approach

May 30, 2019

Indigo Hair Design in Kirstenhof, Cape Town, is owned by Jenny van Rensburg, who has owned five salons during her career – three in Johannesburg and two in the Eastern Cape. This latest salon is run according to a different business model, where each hairstylist and beauty therapist works for herself. Here’s more on how this works and why Jenny chose this business model, as well as feedback from some of the professionals who run their business from Indigo.

Jenny - Owner: My motivating factor was that I feel there are very few salons whose main purpose is to see all the team being successful. Everybody needs to shine, I want to kickstart the generation who comes after me and that is why I have done this business model. It’s a 70-30 split with whatever the hairstylists make – they get 70 and I get 30. I am a second generation hairdresser who grew up in a salon – my mother was my mentor and always encouraged me to stand on my own. I am glad to do the same with these young hairdressers!

Letitia – Nails and Beauty: I have been a therapist for over 15 years and I love it. I find that running my own business within the salon motivates me, I know that if I work I will earn well. We have a great synergy because the ladies in the salon recommend my services and I in turn do the same for them. We do combined hair and beauty promos which helps all our business.

Tiffany - Hair: Jenny gave me the opportunity to study hairdressing after I joined as a shampooist. She is a phenomenal mentor and I look forward to progressing my career within Indigo.

Natasha - Hair: I have been here nearly three years - Jenny had just moved into these premises when I joined. There is a great support structure here and I prefer running my own business, I like being able to manage my own time and to work more flexibly, especially since I have kids – I can make time for them as well as having a great career.
