  • Style Inspiration: The Dance of Time by Emma Boyle

The Dance of Time This is a ballerina's journey told through a haunting series.  Each character represents a phase of struggle and transformation - an ode to the beauty of ballet and hair as an expression of identity. Hot Mess. A dancer lost in despair and doubt.  She's struggling and vulnerable. Her hair becomes chaotic, falling apart.  A symbol of internal collapse. Shadowed Rival. Structured hair, symbolising restraint. She has a quirky edge, everything comes easy to her.  She doesn't find ballet hard. Passé. Previously the prima ballerina but her body doesn't work how it used to.  New dancers are taking her spot.  She's bitter and wants the worst for her fellow dancers as she realises that stardom is fading away. Dreamer. The youngest and quietest.  She is fresh out of dance academy with so much potential. Dreams of becoming the prima ballerina.  She's underestimated and ignored.  Pure with not a lot of world experience Muse. She's the teacher's daughter, compared to others and pressured by her Mother.  The muse of many a painter.  She's there because she has to be. Prima. The star in her prime. Exuding confidence. She's the girl who gets everything. Zero awareness, living and breathing dance Her hair is sculpted, effortlessly regal.  Collection: The Dance of Time HAIR:  Emma Boyle @emmaboylehairstylist Salon: Steph Meyer & Co, Melbourne Photographer: Annis and Barton   @annissbarton Make Up Artist: Shev Kelly    @shevkellymua Stylist: Sophie O’Neil   @sophonz Hair Team & Assistants:  @stephmeyerandco   @brittanyleehair @staceywrighthairdesign

  • EOHCB: How South African Employers Can Verify Employees' Identify & Qualifications To Prevent Fraud

The hiring process is essential for ensuring the success of any company, but it is increasingly complicated by fraudulent activities such as identity theft and falsified qualifications. With a growing number of job seekers submitting fake credentials and personal information, employers need to be diligent in verifying candidates before making hiring decisions. This article discusses how South African employers can effectively verify employees' identity and qualifications to avoid fraud and protect their businesses. 1. Conduct Comprehensive Background Checks One of the most essential steps in preventing fraud is conducting a thorough background check on potential employees. This process helps confirm the identity of the candidate and ensure they meet the required criteria for the role. In South Africa, background checks should include: Identity verification:  Employers can request copies of government-issued identification, such as a South African ID card or passport. To further verify a candidate’s identity, employers can make use of services that match personal details against official government records through the Department of Home Affairs or third-party verification companies. Criminal record check:  The South African Police Service (SAPS) offers criminal background checks, which can be requested for prospective employees. This check helps ensure that the candidate does not have a criminal history that would make them unsuitable for the role, especially for positions of trust or responsibility. Employment history verification:  Employers should directly contact previous employers to verify the candidate’s job titles, dates of employment, and reasons for leaving. This step helps to confirm that the applicant's work experience aligns with their resume. Address verification:  Confirming the candidate’s residential address is also important. Employers can use utilities bills or similar documents to cross-check this information. 2. Verify Educational Qualifications Falsifying educational qualifications is one of the most common forms of fraud in South Africa. To ensure the authenticity of a candidate’s academic background, employers should: Contact the institution directly:  South African universities and colleges can verify academic qualifications. Employers can contact the institution where the candidate claims to have studied, either via email or their online verification systems, to confirm the legitimacy of the qualification. Use verification services:  The South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) offers a qualification verification service that employers can use to confirm the authenticity of a candidate’s qualifications. SAQA is also a valuable resource for checking if qualifications obtained from foreign institutions are legitimate. Check the format of the certificate:  Employers should be aware of potential warning signs such as irregularities in the appearance of the qualification certificate, including poor-quality printing or spelling errors, which may indicate a fraudulent document. 3. Use Online Tools to Cross-Check Identity Information Employers can utilise a range of online platforms to cross-check a candidate’s identity and qualifications: Social media platforms:  Reviewing a candidate’s social media profile or other professional networks can help verify their career history and educational background. It’s essential to ensure consistency between what is stated on the resume and what is presented online. 4. Conduct Skills Testing and Interviews While verifying documents and backgrounds is essential, employers should also assess the candidate’s practical skills: Skills assessments: Administer tests or tasks relevant to the job role to verify the candidate’s skill level. Job-specific scenario questions:  During the interview, ask the candidate to describe how they would handle job-specific scenarios. This helps evaluate if they have the required experience and practical knowledge. Behavioural interviews:  Ask questions that focus on the candidate’s past behaviour in specific situations. This method can help employers assess whether the candidate’s experience aligns with what they claim on their resume. 5. Educate Managers and HR Personnel Employers should ensure that their managers are well-equipped to identify potential fraud. Regular training on the latest techniques for detecting fraudulent documents, understanding South African labour laws, and recognising red flags in resumes is crucial for safeguarding the company. In South Africa, the risk of hiring individuals with fraudulent identities or qualifications is a significant concern for employers. To mitigate these risks, businesses must take a multi-layered approach to employee verification, including thorough background checks, educational and professional certification verification, skills assessments, and the use of trusted verification services. By taking these precautions, employers can ensure they hire trustworthy, qualified employees, which helps protect their company from fraud, reputational damage, and the legal consequences that could arise from employing fraudulent individuals. • Calico, Calico, Calico - Learn How To Achieve This Trend-Setting Look

Calico hair is a multi-coloured hair dye technique designed to mimic the natural patchwork of colours found in calico cats. They’re known for their gorgeous mix of white, orange, black, and sometimes brown patches, so the idea is to create that same beautiful, unique blend in the hair. The trend has been popping up all our social media timelines and this hair trend is not one to blend into the background - the tri-coloured tones beautifully contrast one another to create a strikingly bold look, whilst elevating depth and dimension.  It’s always intriguing to look at how trends evolve over time, with many trends being revitalised in later years. Once popular in the early 2000s with the likes of Christina Aguilera and Kelly Clarkson, the younger generations becoming more experimental with their colour – and calico is at the top of their list!  Whilst calico hair is often regarded a more daring choice, it can be customised to the individual’s personal preference by toning down the colour or changing the colour for a more subtle blended look. Safy B, Owner of Safy B’s Salon said: “When it comes to creating calico hair, it’s all about keeping it soft, patchy in the prettiest way, and customised to each person. I’d start with a good consultation with the client to pick out a dreamy palette, usually soft blondes, vibrant coppers, dark browns, whatever suits their skin tone and vibe best.” The beauty of this colour trend is its immense versatility, suiting an array of different skin tones, hair types and face shapes. Calico hair is perfect for those with warmer skin tones and the warmer colours harmonise beautifully with this skin tone. However, the calico colour trend also works well for those with a cooler skin tone – helping their features to pop and brighten their appearance.  When it comes to sectioning the hair to achieve that perfect calico pattern, Safy explained: “I would take into account if my client wanted something bolder, more like the 90s blocky highlight style that’s making a comeback with this look. I’d start being mapping out the panels to create a block colour pattern, then rinse each panel separately with lukewarm water to avoid the colour bleeding.” SAFY’S FORMULA Starting base: Faded pastel orange all over. 2 inches of natural base 6NA roots. Sectioning: Mapped out the panels to create the block colour pattern. Lightening: For orange panels: pre-lightened roots with Topchic 11SV + 30vol. For blonde panels: pre-lightened with Oxycur + 10vol. 10 minutes before rinsing, took the blonde panel sections and cleansed ends with Oxycur + 5% to lift out the faded orange. Then rinse & re-section. Colour application: Orange: Goldwell Elumen Play Orange. Blonde: Goldwell Topchic 10V + 5% with 3 drops of Cool Violet Pure Pigments. Black: Goldwell Colorance 2N. Allow time to process.   Rinse each panel separately with lukewarm water to avoid colour bleed, then style as desired.

  • Colour Trends from Seung Ki Baek, Rush Artistic Team

SYRUP BLONDE  A syrupy blonde hue that embraces the yellow and orange tones that we have tried to banish for so long – say goodbye to icy, cool, platinum blondes this season! Syrup Blonde is an intensely glossy, rich colour that seamlessly blends yellow and orange hues into a blonde base. This syrupy hue is a mix of warmer copper tones and bright golden tones, with a few low lights blended throughout to add dimension and depth. Syrup blonde requires little to no maintenance between salon visits and less bleaching to achieve a more lived-in feel – which means the hair can grow out more naturally before lightening again in the summer.  CINNAMON BLONDE  Cinnamon blonde is the epitome of sophistication, with its multidimensional tones adding depth to any hairstyle. This tawny, beige blonde is perfect for the transition into the cooler months, and the versatility means this subtle shade can work for most colour palettes, with a cool acorn base and subtle vanilla blonde pieces swirled through the hair. Cinnamon blonde can be effortlessly personalised to suit your features and skin tone without being too much of a change. This is the ideal colour for those not wanting to commit to the upkeep of brighter blondes, or if you’re transitioning for a darker shade and just want to try something new! PLUM DARK CHOCOLATE  Plum dark chocolate will be dominating this season, with the likes of Dua Lipa already rocking this colour! This shade is an infusion of rich chocolate with subtle plum undertones blended throughout, creating a hue that screams cold wintery nights! This versatile shade compliments a variety of skin tones and adds warmth and dimension to the base colour. To enhance the chocolate mauve hue, incorporate balayage highlights for a seamless transition. COWBOY COOPER  The reign of country music continuing well into the end of 2025, coppers have evolved and hit the mark, working in sync with the trending music throughout. It’s an cocktail of mocha mousse brown and copper tones which adds a fiery undertone to the lighter base. Cowboy copper will continue to be one of the hottest colours. It’s rooted warmth and inviting feel has seen the likes of Kendall Jenner and Sydney Sweeney transform their overall look with shade.  ESPRESSO MARTINI BRUNETTE  Super dark yet creamy dark brown tones will also be incredibly popular this season. These have more of a cool tone base and are particularly flattering on those with darker skin tones. They have a richer appearance and give the hair a truly mesmerising shine. If you have green or blue eyes, the cool tones of this shade will bring out the colour in your eyes! This versatile shade compliments a variety of skin tones and depth and dimension to the base colour.

  • Style Inspiration POS NEG by Elly Paynter

‘POS NEG‘ explores the dynamic relationship between positive and negative space, interpreted through hair cutting and colour. Inspired by the tension and harmony that exists between being present and being absent, each look uses bold split tones, colour blocking, and dramatic shapes, creating a juxtaposition between that positive and negative space. Feature colours of red, orange, and blue are intermixed with anchor tones of black, brown, and blonde to create structured voids and vibrant fills - transforming hair into a living sculpture of artistic expression. The cutting techniques emphasize silhouette and shadow, celebrating both the seen and the unseen with sharp edges and deliberate spaces. Colour and shape are manipulated to echo the rhythm of space - softer, more subtle elements collide with texture and movement, while the overall aesthetic remains editorial, edgy and vibrant, and predominantly high-impact. Through this lens, hair becomes not just a medium of beauty, but a canvas of visual storytelling, where absence is just as powerful as presence. HAIR – Colour Inspiration Working to the concept of negative and positive space, presence and absence, I was inspired to create and work with a colour palette that reflected this, and complemented the hair cuts. Bold, feature colours of red, orange and blue were anchored by black, brown and blonde hues with a combination of daring and subtle colour placement enhancing and exaggerating the texture and movement within the styles. Androgyny fused with femininity, strength melded with softness, dramatic shapes were brought to life with split tones and colour blocking techniques to really accentuate texture and impact the shape of the expertly crafted styles. MAKEUP For this shoot, skin was kept clean adhering to the brief of minimalist but high impact. The overall theme of movement, texture and juxtaposing positive and negative space, was reflected in the eye makeup; this was deliberately messy and blurred. Lips were defined with liner and were either impactful and bold, or left more natural. STYLING The extensive styling colour palette was composed of blues, greys, silvers, reds, cream and white with varied textures and finishes – fluffy, metallic, rough and sheer. Reflecting the overall feel of the shoot, we choose to layer the tonal outfits with bold elements that blend beautifully with the elements and storytelling introduced through the hair. PHOTOGRAPHY The initial brief for the shoot backdrop was muted blue, grey or cream, however we opted for a muted pale blue which delivered cool warmth and allowed the hair cuts & colour to shine. An commercial yet editorial vibe was created using a combination of full/half body images and profile shots which allowed the hairstylist and photographer to play with lighting and contrasts. The result was a slightly desaturated or mildly blurred editing style that created a nostalgic, retro essence within the finished images. • Men's Trending Cuts from Jim Shaw

Now is the best time to change up your style. Whether you are after low maintenance cut or a bold new look, here are some styles I think are going to be making an appearance this Summer. Caesar Cut This versatile haircut features a short cut, with straight cut bangs layered to a uniform length all over the head. This is a relatively easy style to maintain and doesn’t require much upkeep. It suits all hair types, including straight, wavy and curly and provides a structured and clean appearance. While this is a simple style, it can be styled with texturising products for a more relaxed look or kept sharp for a more formal appearance. Textured Crop The textured crop is characterised by its shorter sides and back, paired with textured layers on top. The cut emphasises natural movement and texture for a low maintenance and casual look. A blunt fringe can be added straight across the forehead or a messier, softer fringe for a more relaxed feel. This style is easy to maintain and a simple tousle with your fingers will create piecey texture and shape. This popular style, remains a classic and doesn’t date quickly, making it a lasting choice. Mullet The mullet is a great option as the distinctive contrast in lengths creates a bold, rebellious look. The hair in the front and sides of the head is typically cut shorter, sometimes blended or faded, which creates a contrast to the longer hair in the back. This style creates a strong, graphic silhouette due to the dramatic difference in lengths. In recent years, the mullet has experienced a significant comeback, making it a great option if you are looking for a change. Broccoli Cut The broccoli cut features short, often tapered sides and back with a voluminous top of layered curls or waves that resemble a floret of broccoli. While this works best with naturally curly hair, a perm can be used to achieve the dense, textured look. This playful and modern look offers a carefree, yet stylish appearance with a nod to 90’s trends but with a distinct Gen Z twist.
