- The Professional’s Guide to Rehab for Winter Hair with mhb
As winter settles in, salon professionals know exactly what follows. Clients arrive with hair that feels dry, dull, static-prone and increasingly difficult to manage. In South Africa, winter hair challenges are complex. For example a client in Johannesburg experiences a very different winter to someone in Cape Town or Durban. Inland, the cold, dry air can strip moisture from the hair and scalp, leaving hair brittle, dehydrated and lacking shine. Along the coast, wind, rain, fluctuating temperatures and salt air can contribute to frizz, flyaways and reduced manageability. Indoor heating and increased heat styling add to the condition. Regardless of location, winter places additional stress on the hair, often leaving it dry, rough and lacking vitality. The good news is that mhb has a professional solution to every winter hair concern. Through expert consultation and diagnosis, what your clients often describe as "bad hair" can usually be traced to a moisture, protein or scalp imbalance that can be addressed with the right rehab plan. For salons, winter presents one of the strongest in-salon services and retail opportunities of the year. It is the ideal time to position services as restorative care rituals rather than routine treatments. Deep conditioning, bond-building and professional scalp treatments help rehabilitate and restore balance and resilience, while heat protection remains essential as clients continue to rely on styling tools throughout the colder months. Professional brands such as Wella Professionals, Keune and Kadus Professional, distributed exclusively by mhb in South Africa, offer targeted systems designed to repair, protect and maintain hair integrity throughout the season. These solutions allow salons to address a wide range of winter concerns while delivering visible, lasting results. Of course, what happens between appointments is just as important. Effective home care does not need to be complicated. Gentle cleansing, regular hydration, weekly treatment masks and daily leave-in protection help defend against environmental stress and heat styling. The key is consistency. Stand-out Hero Care products for in-salon and at-home: Wella Professionals offers targeted solutions through Ultimate Repair, Ultimate Smooth and Ultimate Color, each designed to address specific concerns from damage recovery and smoothing to colour preservation. Kadus Professional delivers reliable performance with Visible Repair and Fiber Infusion, helping to strengthen, moisturise and restore compromised hair. Keune’s Instant Revive, Blonde Savior and Vital Nutrition, provide solutions for intensive nourishment, blonde care and overall hair vitality. By focusing on education, diagnosis and customised care, you can reinforce your role as a hair health expert and achieve better results for your clients while building loyalty, increasing retail sales and strengthening long-term relationships. At mhb, we remain committed to supporting salon professionals with world-class education, premium brands and practical strategies that deliver measurable results behind the chair. - EOHCB: Workforce Sustainability & Retention In The Hairdressing, Cosmetology, Beauty and Skincare Industry
The hair and beauty industry is experiencing significant challenges with staff turnover and workforce stability. Many salon and spa owners are searching for practical solutions to retain their talented professionals whilst building sustainable businesses. This FAQ addresses the most common questions about creating a stable, engaged workforce in the hair and beauty industry, drawing on industry best practices and proven retention strategies. Whether you're a salon owner struggling with high staff turnover, a manager looking to improve team morale, or a beauty professional seeking to understand your workplace rights, these frequently asked questions provide clear guidance on building a thriving, sustainable work environment. What is workforce sustainability? Workforce sustainability refers to a business's ability to maintain a stable, skilled, and engaged team over time. In the hair and beauty industry, this means creating an environment where professionals can build long-term careers whilst the business maintains consistent service delivery. It involves balancing immediate operational needs with long-term staff development, wellbeing, and career growth opportunities. Why is employee retention so important? Employee retention is crucial because clients often form personal relationships with their stylists, therapists, and technicians. When staff members leave, clients frequently follow them, directly impacting revenue stability. Additionally, retaining experienced staff preserves institutional knowledge, maintains brand identity, strengthens team culture, and reduces the significant costs associated with constant recruitment and training of new employees. What are the main challenges causing high turnover in the hair and beauty industry? The industry faces several unique challenges including: Limited structured career development opportunities Lack of financial literacy support for commission-based workers High competition and demanding client expectations leading to burnout Long working hours and weekend commitments Commission-driven pay structures that can create income instability Insufficient exposure to long-term job security options How can salons and spas create better career development opportunities? Businesses can implement structured career pathways that clearly outline progression from junior positions to senior and managerial roles. This includes providing continuous education opportunities, advanced training programmes, product knowledge sessions, and upskilling workshops. Employees need to see a clear future within the business, with defined steps for advancement and increased responsibility. What types of recognition and reward systems work best in this industry? Effective recognition systems include a combination of financial and non-financial rewards such as: Competitive pay structures balancing basic salaries with performance incentives Commission structures that reward excellence Recognition programmes highlighting staff achievements Simple but meaningful appreciation gestures Opportunities for professional growth and advancement Public acknowledgement of exceptional service or skills How can businesses address work-life balance concerns? Given the demanding nature of the industry, businesses should prioritise: Flexible scheduling options where possible Wellness initiatives and mental health support Fair distribution of weekend and evening shifts Adequate break times during busy periods Policies that support staff wellbeing beyond professional output Recognition that employees have lives outside of work What role does leadership play in employee retention? Leadership quality significantly influences retention rates. Effective salon and spa managers should: Engage openly with staff members Provide constructive, regular feedback Foster inclusive workplace cultures Communicate transparently about expectations, policies, and opportunities Build trust through consistent, fair treatment Create environments where employees feel heard and valued What fair policies and compliance measures should businesses implement? Businesses should adhere to: Fair labour practices and industry regulations Bargaining council agreements and prescriptions Clear employment contracts outlining terms and conditions Proper UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) contributions Sick pay fund contributions Pension fund contributions Transparent policies regarding working hours, leave, and benefits How can businesses create a stronger workplace culture? Building a culture of belonging involves: Regular team-building activities and social events Open dialogue and communication channels Recognition and celebration of diversity and individuality Creating a sense of community within the workplace Fostering connections between colleagues Aligning staff with the brand's values and mission What are the financial benefits of focusing on employee retention? Investing in retention strategies provides significant financial returns through: Reduced recruitment and training costs Maintained client relationships and revenue streams Decreased disruption to business operations Preserved institutional knowledge and expertise Improved team productivity and service quality Enhanced reputation leading to better staff attraction How should businesses approach retention as a long-term strategy? Retention should be viewed as a long-term investment rather than a short-term fix. This involves: Consistently nurturing talent development Regularly reviewing and improving workplace policies Staying current with industry trends and employee expectations Building engaging workplace cultures that evolve with the team Understanding that retention strategies require ongoing commitment and resources What support do commission-based workers need? Commission-based employees often require additional support including: Financial literacy training to manage variable income Base salary components for income stability Clear commission structures and payment terms Professional development to increase earning potential Guidance on building and maintaining client relationships How can businesses measure the success of their retention efforts? Success can be measured through: Reduced staff turnover rates Improved employee satisfaction surveys Client retention statistics Reduced recruitment and training costs Enhanced team productivity measures Positive workplace culture assessments Staff feedback and engagement levels Creating a sustainable workforce in the hair and beauty industry requires a comprehensive approach that addresses the unique challenges faced by professionals in this dynamic sector. By implementing structured career development programmes, fair compensation systems, supportive workplace cultures, and strong leadership practices, businesses can significantly improve employee retention whilst building stronger, more profitable operations. The investment in workforce sustainability pays dividends not only in reduced turnover costs but also in enhanced client satisfaction, improved service quality, and stronger business reputation. As the industry continues to evolve with new trends in wellness, aesthetics, and technology, businesses that prioritise their people will be best positioned to thrive in an increasingly competitive market. Remember that workforce sustainability is not a destination but an ongoing journey that requires consistent attention, adaptation, and commitment to creating environments where both employees and businesses can flourish together. - Style Inspiration: Eden by Danny Pato
Eden is the fantastical new collection from nine-time-consecutive New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year Danny Pato MNZM, photographed by long-time collaborator Mara Sommer. “Eden is a place of mystery and myth,” explains Pato, “where the seeds of life, knowledge and humanity originated. ” “I was inspired by a wondrous environment of colour and form, where flowers grow and flourish; however, in this place of paradise, the asp watches and waits for an opportunity to disrupt the first innocent home of mankind.” “The battle begins between good and evil - can the abundance of beautiful growth withstand the snake in the grass?” Hair forms are inspired by what grows in Eden, both pure and menacing: black peony, poisonous mushroom, crimson clover, spider chrysanthemum, bird of paradise, and, of course, the snake. Pato designed original clothing for the collection, with sculpted bodices, sharp collars, and defined waists contrasting with voluminous skirts, bell sleeves, and layers of tulle. The monochrome base is elevated by bold floral collages. The collection forms part of Pato’s entry for New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year at the 2026 ANZ Hair Industry Awards Creative. Pato is no stranger to recognition, recently becoming the first person outside of Europe to win the AIPP Grand Trophy in twenty years, and becoming the first ever hairdresser invested into the New Zealand Order of Merit, by King Charles III. - L'ANZA: The New Scalp Ritual Every Salon Should Be Talking About
A client sits in your chair. Before she even mentions her colour, cut or treatment, she says something every stylist is hearing more often: “My scalp feels dry.” “My head feels itchy after colour.” “I’m seeing more flakes.” “My hair feels thinner.” “My scalp just doesn’t feel healthy.” For a long time, scalp concerns were treated as a small side conversation. Today, they are becoming one of the biggest opportunities in professional haircare. Because healthy hair does not start with the ends. It starts at the scalp. This July, L’ANZA Scalp Therapy arrives in South Africa, bringing salons a new way to turn scalp care into a beautiful, professional ritual, not just another product recommendation. Scalp care is the new salon lifestyle! Clients are no longer only buying products. They are buying routines, rituals and moments that fit into the way they want to live. They want hair that feels healthy. They want a scalp that feels calm. They want colour appointments that feel more comfortable. They want advice they can trust from their stylist. This is where salons can lead. L’ANZA has created Scalp Therapy as a ritual that starts before the shampoo bowl, continues through the salon service, and follows the client home. It becomes part of her weekly self-care rhythm: a clean scalp, a calmer scalp, and hair that feels beautifully cared for from root to tip. Two scalp systems. Two different conversations. Not every scalp concern is the same and this is where the stylist consultation becomes powerful. The Balancing System is for clients with dry, irritated, flaky or sensitive scalps. This is the client who needs comfort, moisture and relief. Powered by L’ANZA’s Papaya Soothing Complex, the Balancing System helps move the scalp from sensitive to soothed, while supporting a healthier scalp environment. The Stimulating System is for a different client: the one worried about thinning, shedding, reduced density or hair that feels like it is not growing as it used to. Powered by the Loquat Densifying Complex, this system supports clients concerned with hair fall and fuller-looking hair. For salons, this means better consultations, better recommendations and a clearer way to match each client to the right scalp ritual. Launching first: The L’ANZA Balancing Ritual Arriving in South Africa July, the first launch focuses on the Balancing System. Together, these steps create a salon ritual that feels premium, intentional and easy for clients to continue at home. Why stylists should pay attention South African clients are dealing with more scalp stress than ever: heat, colour services, styling products, protective styles, dry winter air, hormonal changes, stress and product build-up. Many clients do not know what their scalp needs. They just know that something feels off. That is the opportunity. A scalp conversation can become a treatment. A treatment can become a ritual. A ritual can become a trusted homecare routine. And a trusted routine keeps clients connected to your salon. L’ANZA Scalp Therapy gives stylists a beautiful way to speak about scalp health with confidence, care and luxury. Because this is not just about treating the scalp. It is about creating a lifestyle of healthier hair, starting at the root. L’ANZA Scalp Therapy launches in South Africa this July. Demo bookings open from July. Interested salons can prebook their L’ANZA Scalp Therapy demo via the link provided and experience the new ritual from root to result.
