This competition closes on Sunday 25 June, and you can either email the photos to info@hairnews.co.za, or Whatsapp them to 082 891 8537. You can also post them on our Facebook page here.

  • Tools - Shape them Up or Ship them Out

It’s easy to stop thinking about how your tools look, when you work with them every day. You can become so used to their appearance that you don’t really notice when your comb starts looking battered, or your brush bristles are past their best, or your tint brush is becoming so worn it’s turning into more of a tint spatula... But although you are used to their ever-shabbier appearance, your clients may notice and it will affect their perceptions of the salon. So, sometime within the next week, take up the challenge to do the Great Tool Shape Up or Ship Out. Line everything up and take a look at it from a client’s perspective. Ask yourself: Is the tool perfectly clean? Does it look new or worn? What impression will this tool give to a new client? Depending on your answers, it may just be time to go shopping - but it’s money well spent, because investing in the image you present to clients shows that you have passion for your trade, and that you are a stickler for hygiene and professionalism! Happy shopping.

  • Schwarzkopf Shaping Futures 2017 - Applications Open

The fabulous Shaping Futures initiative by Schwarzkopf Professional, will be running its next programme later in 2017 and applications are now open for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, who have ambition to succeed and a passion for learning and would like to change their lives and empower themselves by learning a new craft. 30 students will be selected from the applicants. These students will attend a free 6-8 week hairdressing learnership programme which will cover technical hairdressing skills, business advice, motivation, interview training and work readiness preparation. The education is given by leading local and international experts, who offer their time to help these aspiring hairdressers develop their skills and talents. The course includes a free breakfast and lunch every day, and students also receive a free hairdressing starter pack containing scissors, a tint bowl and brush, a spray bottle, clips, combs, mannequin heads, aprons and bags. On completion of the course, graduates receive certificates as proof of the skills they have learned, which helps them to find salon placements where they can continue their journey towards becoming a hairdressing professional. Top performing students are assisted with employment opportunities. The Shaping Futures team, in partnership with the Sharpeville Foundation and Le Looks salons, have secured job placements for almost 86% of the graduates from the March/April 2016 programme. This initiative can change lives and make dreams come true, offering hope for the future and a rewarding career to the people who deserve a chance and opportunity in life. An example of the programme’s success is the story of Christopher Sibiya, pictured below, whose passion for hairdressing, dedication and determination allowed him to embrace an entirely new career, and achieve his goal of becoming a salon owner. Color Melting By Chad Demchuk, USA This collection won Best Color Collection at the Trifecta Awards, held by Salon Services for salons in Canada, Mexico and the USA. “Inspired by melting crayon art, Demchuk created hair colour that tricks the eye by not knowing where colour starts and stops. This was achieved by blending multiple forms of colour placement with a minimal amount of foil packets, paired with strong fundamental cutting and styling techniques.” Credits: Hair by Chad Demchuk, Dallas Make-up by Bridgett LaDawn of Glamour Rx, Dallas Clothes Styling by Chad Demchuk, Dallas, Texas, USA

About Ursula: Ursula Brett has been in the professional hair and beauty industry for almost 30 years, marketing top brands including Redken, Paul Mitchell, Matis, and OPI. With a passion for the professional industry as well as all-things-digital, Ursula is able to share her knowledge on marketing, websites, social media and how to optimise these for your salon. • Colour Transformation: In The Pink

The talented Kim Franklin Hickman, master stylist at Carlton Hair International, did this gorgeous transformation into a soft, trendy pastel pink. Here’s Kim’s how-to recipe: Becca Blair is a natural level 6 and before this service, her hair was already pre-lightened but with some root growth (see the first pictures). I pre-lightened her roots to a 10 level using Davines Ammonia Free bleaching powder with 20-vol (1:3). I then toned the hair to get a clean base using Davines Mask with Vibrachrom 30g 10/0 + 0.5g 2/21 5 vol (12) for 15 minutes. I dried the hair completely and applied Davines Ammonia Free (A New Colour), 7g Pure Colour Violet + 50g Creme Base +100g 5-Vol for 35 minutes.
